06 Nov How to implement Pardot’s tracking code – with tricks and tips
Setting up Pardot’s tracking code is easy.
It’s not different from setting up Google Analytics code.
Why track visitors?
The goal of tracking visitors is to eventually convert visitors into someone you can market to – which is called a Prospect in the Pardot lexicon.
Pardot stores the data for 6 months, but it is never actually erased – the Pardot recycle-bin can’t be emptied, which means that if a prospect comes back to life – you can have his entire history in Pardot form his first visit.
Tracking visitors in Pardot
When you open Pardot, Underneath Marketing > Campaigns Pardot stores all the tracking codes.
Under the campaign > View Tracking Code will be in the top-right corner.
It’s a Javascript code to copy and paste into the header of pages you wish to track.
To know if it’s working you can either open Pardot and take a look at the stats while browsing the tracked pages in another tab/browser or use Ghostery for Chrome.
Ghostery clearly shows which scripts run on the page you are browsing. Pardot is under the ‘Site Analytics’ category in Ghostery.

Once you implement the tracking code, Pardot automatically starts to track all the visitors of the concerned pages, where the tracking code runs.
A useful thing to know is that each campaign has its unique tracking code, so you can use the same Pardot account accross multiple websites or multiple campaigns accross different pages of your website.
